The core difference
A barcode in the traditional sense (Code 128, UPC, EAN, Code 39) is a 1D or "linear" code: parallel bars encoding a fixed or short variable-length string, read in one direction by a laser or camera scanner. A QR code is a 2D or "matrix" code: a square grid of black-and-white modules that can encode hundreds of characters and be read from any angle.
The tradeoff is capacity versus universality. 1D barcodes hold less data but are supported by decades of scanning hardware and retail infrastructure. QR codes hold much more data and scan reliably from any angle with a basic phone camera, but retail point-of-sale systems still expect a standard UPC/EAN for checkout.
When a traditional barcode is the better choice
Choose a 1D barcode (Code 128 for internal SKUs, UPC/EAN for retail products) when you are scanning at retail checkout, working with dedicated laser or CCD scanners, or scanning at high volume where speed and low error rate matter most. 1D scanners are inexpensive, durable, and widely deployed in warehouses and stores.
If your item is sold at retail or through a marketplace, it needs a standard UPC or EAN regardless of whether you also use a QR code elsewhere no point-of-sale system will accept a QR code as a substitute for the required retail barcode.

When a QR code is the better choice
Choose a QR code when a single label needs to carry more than an identifier for example, a batch number, expiry date, and lot together, or a link to a product manual, warranty page, or asset maintenance log. QR codes also scan reliably from any angle, which helps on curved surfaces or awkwardly placed asset tags where a 1D barcode might need precise alignment.
If your team scans primarily with smartphones rather than dedicated scanners such as field technicians checking in assets, or small teams counting stock with a phone app a QR code scans just as fast as a 1D code and gives you the option to encode more later without redesigning the label.

Scan speed and reliability in practice
For pure scan speed at high volume, dedicated 1D laser scanners still edge out phone-camera QR scanning, particularly in fast-paced receiving or shipping stations. For everyday small-business counting, receiving, and pick verification, the difference is negligible modern phone cameras scan both formats in well under a second under normal lighting.
Print quality matters more than symbology choice for reliability: a smudged or too-small QR code fails just as often as a poorly printed 1D barcode. Whichever you choose, test scans with the same devices and lighting conditions your team actually works in before labeling an entire warehouse.
Can you use both on the same label?
Yes many shipping labels and product packages already combine a UPC/EAN for retail scanning with a QR code linking to more information. For internal inventory, it is more common to standardize on one format per use case (Code 128 for bin labels, QR for asset tags) rather than printing both on every label, to keep labels smaller and simpler to generate.
