What kitting is
Kitting takes two or more distinct items that are normally stocked and sold separately and packages them together as a single unit a "kit" for shipping or sale. A common example: a smartphone, charging cable, and protective case sold together as a bundle, or a gift set combining several individually stocked products.
The key distinction from manufacturing is that kitted components are not physically transformed or permanently joined; in principle, they could be un-kitted and returned to individual stock.
Kitting vs. assembly
Assembly builds a genuinely new product from component parts, often through manufacturing steps like fastening, welding, or combining ingredients the result is a distinct item, tracked under its own SKU, that cannot be broken back into original components without effort or loss. Kitting simply packages existing sellable items together, typically with lighter-touch labor (boxing, shrink-wrapping) and no physical transformation.
This distinction matters for inventory accounting: kitted components are often still deducted individually from stock (since each remains a distinct trackable item), while assembled products typically consume raw materials via a bill of materials and become a new finished-good SKU.
Pre-kitted vs. kit-on-demand
Pre-kitting builds kits ahead of demand and stocks the finished kit as its own SKU faster to fulfill an order, but ties up inventory in a specific bundle configuration that may not sell as fast as its individual components. Kit-on-demand assembles the bundle only when an order comes in, keeping components flexible for individual sale but adding a packing step to each order.
High-volume, stable bundle configurations (a starter kit sold constantly) usually favor pre-kitting; low-volume or highly configurable bundles usually favor kitting on demand.
- Pre-kitted: faster fulfillment, less flexible stock
- Kit-on-demand: flexible stock, added packing step per order
