A recipe is a bill of materials
A candle or soap recipe — wax or base oils, fragrance or essential oil, colorant, and packaging, each in a specific ratio — is functionally a bill of materials, the same underlying structure a manufacturer uses to cost a finished product. Rolling up actual component costs (including a wastage allowance for spillage or trimming) gives a real per-unit cost to price against, rather than a rough guess that can quietly erode margin as raw material prices shift.
Cure time delays when a batch is actually sellable
Cold-process soap typically needs several weeks of cure time before it is ready to sell, and candles need adequate cooling and cure time of their own before they perform correctly. A batch that just finished production is not yet sellable stock — it needs a distinct "curing" state, separate from finished, available inventory, so a maker does not accidentally list or ship product that has not finished its required cure period.
Small ingredient ratios, real cumulative drift
Fragrance oil, colorant, and other minor ingredients are typically used at small percentages of total batch weight, which makes small measurement inconsistencies easy to overlook batch to batch. Across dozens of batches, that drift adds up — either into real ingredient cost variance or into product-quality inconsistency customers notice even when the maker has not changed the recipe on paper.
