A work order is the instruction to build a specific quantity of a product from its bill of materials (BOM). Work order software creates that instruction, tracks its status (draft, released, in progress, completed), and connects it directly to the inventory that the build actually consumes and produces — rather than leaving the connection between "we made this" and "stock went up and components went down" to a manual adjustment after the fact.
