What replenishment is

Replenishment is the broader process of restoring inventory to a target level, whichever mechanism accomplishes it. That can mean placing a purchase order with an external supplier, but it can just as easily mean transferring stock internally from a backroom or central warehouse to a retail shelf or a specific work cell.

The goal in every case is the same: keep enough stock on hand to meet expected demand without overstocking, using whatever movement or order gets inventory from where it currently sits to where it is needed.

Replenishment vs. reordering

Reordering specifically means placing a new purchase order with an external supplier when stock runs low, typically triggered by hitting a reorder point. Replenishment is the umbrella term it includes reordering, but also covers internal stock transfers (moving inventory between locations you already own) that never involve a supplier at all.

A multi-location retailer, for example, replenishes its stores primarily by transferring stock from a central distribution center, and only reorders from suppliers to keep that distribution center itself stocked.

Common replenishment methods

Reorder-point replenishment triggers a new order or transfer automatically once stock falls to a calculated threshold, accounting for demand during lead time plus a safety buffer. Periodic replenishment instead reviews stock on a fixed schedule (weekly, monthly) and orders enough to bring it back to a target level regardless of exactly when it dipped low.

Demand-driven replenishment uses real-time or near-real-time sales data (like point-of-sale scans) to trigger replenishment as items actually sell, rather than relying on a fixed threshold or schedule common in fast-moving retail and grocery environments where demand shifts quickly.
