How to use this classification
Give A-items the tightest inventory control: frequent cycle counts, closely monitored reorder points, and priority attention when a discrepancy shows up. C-items can generally run leaner — less frequent counts and looser reorder buffers — since an error there has much smaller financial impact.
Re-run this analysis periodically. An item's classification shifts as its sales value changes, and a stale ABC tier applied to a product whose importance has changed leads to under- or over-controlling the wrong items.
Frequently Asked Questions
What method does this ABC analysis tool use?
It ranks your SKUs by value (highest to lowest), calculates each item's cumulative share of total value, and classifies items as A (up to 80% cumulative value), B (up to 95%), or C (the remaining long tail) — the standard 80/20-based ABC cutoff.
What should I use as "value" for each SKU?
Annual sales value (units sold × unit price) is most common, but you can substitute annual usage quantity, gross margin contribution, or another metric depending on what you are trying to prioritize — inventory control, purchasing attention, or something else.
How many SKUs can I paste in?
There is no hard limit, but this tool is meant for a quick manual check on a few dozen to a couple hundred items. For a full catalog analysis, export from your inventory system and use a spreadsheet or dedicated reporting tool.
Does this tool save my data?
No. This is a client-side calculation only — nothing is sent to a server or saved. Refreshing the page resets it to the default example.
