What put-away is
Put-away is the warehouse process that happens right after receiving: taking goods that have been checked in against a purchase order and moving them to their designated storage location a specific bin, shelf, or rack position rather than leaving them staged near the dock.
It is a distinct step from receiving itself. Receiving confirms what arrived and in what quantity; put-away determines and executes where that stock physically goes so it can be found again later.
The typical put-away process
After an item is received and checked against the purchase order, it is assigned a storage location based on the warehouse's slotting logic (fast movers near shipping, similar items grouped together, size or weight considerations). Staff then physically move the item to that location and confirm the placement, ideally by scanning both the item and the location barcode together.
That final scan-to-confirm step is what keeps the system's recorded location accurate. Skipping it and simply "knowing where it went" is how a warehouse's recorded locations quietly drift from reality over time.
Directed vs. undirected put-away
In directed put-away, the system tells staff exactly which location to use for each item, based on slotting rules, rather than leaving the choice to whoever is handling the pallet that day. This is more consistent and easier to audit, since every item of a given type always lands in a predictable place.
Undirected (or "wherever fits") put-away is faster to set up but leads to inconsistent placement over time, especially across shifts or staff turnover, and makes locations harder to trust without frequent verification.
Common put-away mistakes
The most common failure is placing an item in a different location than what gets recorded often because staff skip the confirmation scan under time pressure. This creates a "phantom stockout": the system shows the item as in stock, but nobody can find it, so it gets treated as unavailable, reordered unnecessarily, or missed entirely on an order.
A second common mistake is inconsistent placement for a SKU spreading the same item across multiple, unrelated locations over time makes both picking and cycle counting slower, since staff have to check several spots instead of one.
