What physical asset management is

Physical asset management is the process of tracking, maintaining, and accounting for tangible, reusable assets, IT hardware, tools, vehicles, machinery, furniture, throughout their working life. It answers three questions at any moment: where is this asset, who has it or is responsible for it, and what condition or maintenance state is it in.

The asset management process, stage by stage

A formal asset management process covers the same core stages regardless of industry, though the specific tasks within each stage vary by asset type.

  • Acquisition: record purchase date, cost, supplier, and warranty terms for every new asset as it enters service, not after the fact.
