How to use this number
Run this after every production batch and log it against the BOM or work order it came from. A single low-yield run is usually a specific, findable cause (a bad material lot, a machine out of calibration, a new operator); a slow downward trend across runs on the same BOM is worth investigating before it becomes the new normal.
If rework units are a large share of the loss rather than scrap, the fix is often upstream — tighter incoming-material checks or an earlier inspection step — since rework costs labor on top of the material that scrap alone does not.

First-pass yield = (Good units produced ÷ Units started) × 100. It measures the share of a production run that came out right the first time, before any rework — the units that needed correction are counted separately from both the "good" and "scrap" totals.
What is a normal yield rate?
It depends heavily on the process — precision manufacturing (electronics, pharma) often targets 95%+ first-pass yield, while processes with more natural variation (food production, textiles, cutting from raw stock) commonly run lower and treat some rework or trim loss as routine. Track your own baseline over several runs rather than comparing to an industry number that may not match your process.
How is yield different from scrap rate?
Scrap rate is the share of started units that had to be thrown away entirely (Scrap ÷ Units started). Yield is the share that came out correct without needing rework. A run can have a low scrap rate but still a low yield if a lot of units needed rework rather than being scrapped outright — this calculator reports both from the same three numbers.
