Which format should I use?

For internal warehouse and inventory tracking, use Code 128 — it encodes any SKU (letters, numbers, dashes) at any length, and any modern barcode scanner reads it without special configuration. There is no registration requirement to use Code 128 for internal-use barcodes.

Use EAN-13 or UPC-A only if you are labeling retail products for point-of-sale scanning through a registered retailer or marketplace, since those formats are built around a globally-unique, manufacturer-registered number with a check digit see the GS1 barcode standards guide for how that numbering works.

Which barcode format should I use for inventory?
Code 128 is the most flexible choice for internal inventory labels — it encodes any SKU format (letters, numbers, dashes) at any length, and every modern barcode scanner reads it. Use EAN-13 or UPC-A only if you are labeling retail products for point-of-sale, since those formats require a registered manufacturer prefix to be globally unique.
Do I need to buy a barcode number (GS1 prefix) to use this tool?
Only if you are selling the product at retail through channels that check barcode registration (major retailers, some marketplaces). For internal warehouse and inventory tracking, you can generate and use any Code 128 barcode you want — there is no registration requirement for internal-use barcodes.
Why does EAN-13 or UPC-A reject my number?
EAN-13 requires exactly 13 digits and UPC-A requires exactly 12, including a check digit as the last number. If your input has the wrong length or the check digit does not match, generation will fail — see the GS1 barcode standards guide for how the check digit is calculated.
Can I print the barcode this tool generates?
