Do you need dedicated hardware at all?
Before buying anything, consider whether your team's existing phones are enough. Modern smartphone cameras reliably scan Code 128, UPC/EAN, and QR codes for receiving, cycle counts, and pick verification in most small and mid-size inventory operations, at zero additional hardware cost.
Dedicated scanners earn their cost once scan volume gets high enough that phone-camera focus time adds up, when staff wear gloves that make touchscreens awkward, or when oily, dusty, or low-light conditions degrade camera performance consistently.
Handheld laser scanners
Laser scanners read 1D barcodes only (Code 128, UPC, EAN, Code 39) by sweeping a laser beam across the code. They are inexpensive, extremely fast for high-volume 1D scanning, and durable enough for daily warehouse use, but cannot read QR codes or Data Matrix.
Choose a laser scanner if your labels are exclusively 1D barcodes and your priority is raw scan speed at checkout or a shipping station. If you use or plan to use QR codes anywhere in your workflow, a 2D imager is the safer choice.
Handheld 2D imager scanners
Imager-based scanners use a small camera sensor instead of a laser, letting them read both 1D and 2D codes (QR, Data Matrix) as well as scan from screens (a customer's phone, for example). They cost somewhat more than laser-only scanners but future-proof your setup if you might adopt QR labels later.
Rugged imager scanners from brands like Zebra and Honeywell also read damaged, smudged, or poorly printed labels better than either lasers or phone cameras, which matters in harsh environments like cold storage or outdoor yards.
Fixed-mount scanners
Fixed-mount imagers sit at a stationary point a packing station, conveyor, or checkout counter and scan items as they pass by, hands-free. These make sense for high-throughput, repetitive scanning points where an operator would otherwise pick up and put down a handheld scanner hundreds of times a shift.
They are overkill for most small-business inventory setups and are typically reserved for higher-volume fulfillment or manufacturing lines.
Connection types: Bluetooth, USB, and wireless
Bluetooth scanners pair with a phone or tablet, giving staff mobility around the warehouse floor without being tethered to a workstation ideal for picking, receiving, and cycle counts done while walking. USB (wired) scanners are simplest to set up and best suited to a fixed counting or checkout station where mobility is not needed.
Wireless (non-Bluetooth, radio-frequency) scanners with a base station offer longer range than Bluetooth, useful in larger warehouses, but cost more and require the base station to stay within range of the scanner.

Entry-level Bluetooth 1D laser scanners run roughly $30-80. 2D imager scanners with Bluetooth typically run $100-250. Rugged, industrial-grade imagers built for drops, dust, and extreme temperatures run $300-800 depending on brand and feature set. Fixed-mount imagers for a packing line typically start around $300 and scale up with throughput requirements.
For most small businesses just starting with barcode scanning, the right first purchase is often none at all start with phone cameras, and only invest in dedicated hardware once volume or environment genuinely requires it.
